  • Assessment

  • Employee background checks
  • Medication safety
  • Patient care
  • Services

  • Case management

While accreditation is not required for treatment centers to be able to operate, it indicates that a treatment facility has gone above and beyond to provide the highest quality of care to patients.

Joint Commission certification serves as a mark of excellence, which illustrates that a treatment center has committed to putting patient care first. Accreditation is a voluntary process, and each organization needs to apply. Once accreditation is earned, it must be maintained over time with annual surveys.

What is the Joint Commission Accreditation?

joint commission national quality approval sealThe Joint Commission is an outside accreditation body that monitors health care facilities to improve patient safety and the quality of care. Accreditation is important because it ensures that facilities are following a set of high safety and clinical standards as they deliver needed health care to clients and patients. Accreditation is also needed to be licensed by the Department of Children and Families in the state of Florida and is needed to apply for insurance contracts and reimbursements.

Being accredited by the Joint Commission requires continuous compliance with the standards as the organization is always open to being surveyed. Standard surveys happen every 3 years for reaccreditation, which requires an organization to undergo a survey by Joint Commission staff. The Joint Commission standards are more stringent and focus more on safety, environment of care and care of the client than other accrediting bodies.

Joint Commission and Health Care Organizations

There are a couple of different accrediting bodies in behavioral healthcare and Joint Commission is seen as the gold standard. Becoming accredited requires intense scrutiny of the processes in the organization and adherence to the standards written by the Joint Commission. The Joint Commission also makes available tools organizations can use on an ongoing basis to ensure safety and quality of the organization.

The Joint Commission is an independent, not-for-profit organization and is governed by a board that includes nurses, consumers and physicians. The Joint Commission sets the standards by which health care quality is measured in the United States and other areas around the world.

How Does the Joint Commission Promote Patient Safety?

The Joint Commission standards function as the foundation and process for healthcare organizations to gauge and enhance their performance. These standards focus on patient safety and quality care. The Joint Commission develops a standards criteria based upon interactions with consumers and their feedback, as well as government agencies and healthcare professionals.

Why Choose an Accredited Treatment Center?

If a person or their family member is struggling with a substance use disorder, they may become overwhelmed by the large number of addiction treatment centers in their area. When options appear to be endless, quality care become increasingly important.

Unannounced Survey | Turning Point of Tampa

What is the Joint Commission Survey?

Joint Commission surveyors visit accredited health care organizations a minimum of once every 36 months (two years for laboratories). These surveys are used to evaluate standards compliance. All regular Joint Commission accreditation surveys are unplanned and unannounced.

Joint Commission surveys may include topics such as medication management, environment of care, data management, infection control, competence, and billing and regulatory review.
